Or as the article suggests, the capacity for testing has increased dramatically, but demand for testing hasn't.

It's the best possible way to fail to meet the target. Now there's capacity to run more tests getting more swabs is easy. They just have to change the rules on who is allowed to be tested. Right now you only get a test in exceptional circumstances. Now those circumstances can be a little bit less exceptional.

I don't, generally, agree with you argumentative people on here but in this instance SirGalahad, in this instance, is correct. Matt Hancock will be grilled to the end of his tether when this is all over as will a few other so called politicians. They knew this was going to happen sooner or later and now the time has come they are woefully unprepared. His only saving grace, I suppose, is that he is the new boy and the failings have been caused by others before him. But he is in the chair.

I don't mind the mistakes and the failings, we are where are -these are very tough times, what annoys me is the lack of transparency.

I am sure the public would be quite accepting if he said:
'look we had this target, we just havent been able to reach it, we were woefully unprepared, but this is what we are doing to sort it out now'

the term is called confirmation bias -ie getting the interpretation you want.

Can't really say anything about the current rate. Have to wait the end of the month. All sorts could be going on such a purchasing new higher capacity testing machines.

100,000 a day though. Quick sum. Best way to maintain social distancing is probably drive through, say one a minute. 100,000min = 1,667hrs. 69days. Say 30sec to take a test instead. 35days. Say only one 8hr shift can be effectively used 105day.105 people. So it is feasible but more complications than just time. Where the tests are done and social isolation for instance. There are labs scattered around the country.

The government spent 16,000,000 on tests from China which didn't work.
Can't see them reaching their target when they buy crap from China.
While the UK has good expertise in diagnostics, the industry itself is small compared to other countries.
Instead of relying on dodgy stuff from the likes of China, the UK should be building up its own medical industries.
 
I cant ever understand why politicians declare targets, they only offer a stick with which to beat them with.

Tbf they didn't spend the full amount. I believe they had an 'option' on the tests which probably means only a deposit, again probably refunded now.
