Cutting padstone

Hi.

Putting 203x102x23kg beam at 4m length to open up dining.

I went to builders merchant for padstone. Only had 440x215x100 size.

I've cut it in half but now thinking maybe should have used full to spread load.

Not specified on drawings. From your experience is this OK?

Did the S.E. specify a padstone size? Did the SE know you had brickwork masonry as opposed to softer blocks?

No. It was done from drawings.

Brick is bloody strong. Do I even need padstone

Have you had any calcs done for this? If so, it would be possible to do a check knowing what load the beam is carrying.

whats in the picture wouldn’t be enough for me. the mortar in the brickwork is soft. i’d use 2 courses of 600mm concrete lintels to spread the load wider.

That would be overkill for the sort of load the beam would be carrying.

Is only supporting a free standing brick wall and as a purlin for joists.

Mortor is soft though.

Pics of end result. Will need to fix brick work in between joists that had dropped down. Other than that job went quite smoothly
