Here's an idea, while they are on their knees grovelling, they could check under nearby cars for any signs of interference .

That’s been going on for years. I had one come in my garage as he said he popped in Asda for 10 mins and when he came out, it sounded like a tank. All gone - unbolted at the manifold and sawn off just after. Even ripped all the lambda sensor wiring. More common on Hybrid/Prius's. Reason being on short journeys the engine is hardly used so the cat isn’t stinking hot. Puts the running costs up on the car though when you've got to spend a grand plus to get it fixed.

I thought my cc had been stolen a few weeks ago, I'd got in the car and on starting it - it sounded really loud as if no exhaust, looking underneath all I could see was a gap in the middle.
Luckily it just turned out that going up an unmade road I had knocked the middle section back a bit and it had fallen apart, quickfit slipped it back together for me (there are other exhaust centres).

One of the places I used to work had some wheeled mirrors on handles at the gate, that they pushed under cars to inspect the underside.
