Hi.

I plan to install CCTV cameras at home.

I came across a recommendation that a wire cage around the 'delicate' (lens) camera, to avoid the possibility of someone throwing something at it.

I am curious here. Wouldn't the wires interfere with a captured image?.

Yes chances are, but the main problem with CCTV is spider webs a wire frame to spin them from will increase the problem and make cleaning them more difficult.
PS. A paint brush stuck it the end of a length of plastic overflow pipe is a useful tool!(y)

It should work so long as you can clean it. The lens should focus past the frame, making it invisible.
There's a technique called "pull focus" used in films where you can show a tiger, then adjust focus and reveal the bars of the cage. The camera needs to be on the longer end of the lens, not on a wide angle (common on cctv cameras

In theatre the conventional tallescope or ladder is being replaced by a tension wire grid. This is basically a 2" wire rope net under tension that you walk on. The lights are about 3 feet away from the mesh, and shine through the mesh..the mesh doesn't show because the lights are focused past the grid.

That is a tad extreme unless you live in a very very rough area. You do not need a cage just make sure the cameras are out of reach for the average sized human.

cages usually have openings so the person needs to be a crack shot to hit the camera and the IR bounce back wouldn't be an issue.

but spray cans makes the argument irrelevant?

Well, it works for me. In fact, the first time I was up a ladder spraying it on my camera, half a dozen spiders just jumped out of the soffits as soon as I pressed the sprat and frightened the life out of me. Your spiders must be as ‘ard as nails!

Many thanks to you all. I will just put it up without the cage.

ron. gold, seems to me you could recommend your system. Good picture, reliable?.

I had two quotes:

(1) 2 X Dahua cameras £182, NVR 1TB £147.00, 30 Metre CAT 5 cable £9.79 + VAT

(2) 2 Dahua cameras £182, NVR 4TB £242.00, 30 Metre CAT 5 cable £9.79 +VAT

4TB * To add cameras later.

Thanks everyone.

The cameras I chose are both Motion Detector as well as Night Vision.

So I will go with the 4TB quote as suggested by Handymanjo.
