Migrants crossing the channel. What could/should be done?

Some sort of action is better than some sort of never ending discussion.
So come on, tell us what your 'some sort of action' entails...

You won't because you haven't got a clue what you're blithering on about!

And the fact that you don't understand that the problem won't be solved without constructive cooperation says it all...

The 'little englander' approach sure as hell ain't gonna work (n)

Perhaps we could set a policy where we accept a certain number of genuine migrants per year but the application must be made while in France and ALL those who try to cross the channel illegally should be actively returned, even if they are 100 yards from the U.K?
From post #3
Perhaps the message needs to get across to the migrants. If it gets out that they will be returned when picked up it might dissuade them

With who? The French? They’re assisting them.

Now, your turn to tell us what you would do other than bumping gums with like minded do-gooders.

Through the proper channels.
Would that be the English Channel? ;)
Sorry I couldn't resist.

Like knocking on the door of an embassy?
Have you tried accessing a UK embassy abroad? You have to state your business on the gate before you're allowed any where near the door.
Let alone accessing a UK embassy in a war zone.

1) Talk to French government requesting agreed return point
Priti Patel, "Will you take these asylum seekers, Mr Macron, We don't want them."
Mr Macron, "Non!".

2) Announce to public issue has been addressed and resolved with agreed procedure to return all illegal immigrants....
Return them to where?
3) Intercept immigrants and make sure boats are destroyed.
And do what with the asylum seekers?

How do you propose they should be 'actively returned'?

Are you suggesting that our navy should force them back to France?

A tad difficult given the requirement to observe the relevant territorial waters agreements

How exactly do you intend to 'return them when picked up' given the limitations of the above?

With who? The French? They’re assisting them.
You have proof of this?

If so, then put up or shut up!

The only way to solve European/Global problems is to have a coordinated European/Global approach...

Sadly the UK has decided to go it's own way, so this 'problem' will only get worse!

There is no obligation for migrants/asylum seekers to seek asylum in the first country of arrival.
It is a dumb system that allows them to arrive in Greece, wander across Europe, then jump on a boat to UK and claim Asylum.

Was there any serious attempt by them to cooperate during the many years whilst we were EU members and there was an obvious issue?

Maybe if the UK had been prepared to play ball over taking a fair share of asylum seekers, other nations might have been prepared to play ball over stopping asylum seekers.

Yakkett yakkety yak. All sit round a table, talk the talk, eat biscuits, drink tea, get paid, do nothing. That sounds like a lot of expensive talking.
