Trolley jack bother

I've got the jack upside down draining the oil out. The oil is very poor state. Will give a few hours to drain.

May need to fill with fresh, work the jack to get any deposits of the old mixed with the new, then drain and fill again. If the jack is kaput, have only wasted a bit of new oil so nowt spoiling.

SGS sell good kit.

Bought a Snap-on one on offer at £160 a while back for home, will last me out.

Can't understand scrimping on such an important safety item personally.

The Halfords Heavy Duty 3 ton axle stands are a great bit of kit as well..

More sentiment than anything else and I'd never use a jack that wasn't safe.

Have refilled and bled the jack but only lifting half way before pumping becomes nil so sadly, time for a new jack . The SGS one looks favourable.
 
I bought a 10 ton Bottle Jack from SGS and that was very good quality, not the cheapest but you get what you pay for.

I wonder if the pickup for the pump has come off? Have you tried bleeding it when under a small load?

You say the oil is dirty.

I have a large hydraulic jack where dirt got onto the piston and, I presume, wore or got past the seals. If your oil is dirty something similar must have happened. I think you'd need to strip it down and clean it spotlessly inside, and replace any seals or ball valves that were scored or worn.

With a safety-critical tool, probably not worth it.
 
I'd be happy to strip it down but where would I get parts for a 30 years old trolley jack?
 
I'm stripping it down out of curiosity to see what the problem lies. The main piston ring nut is damn tight but I'll get it off.

Am I right to believe the arrowed screw in the picture is pressure relieve should the jack be used on too heavy a load? I seem to recall when I got the jack, there was a Do Not Adjust label on it.

So far I've taken the pump piston rod out and it has both a cup seal, an o ring and yes, there's a ball at the bottom.

Presumably a seal on the lift arm's piston too.
 
If the main ram seal is good then you'll probably get buy with a set of O rings and ball bearings.....worth a look at, if only for the experience.
