Soil and Hardcore compacting/wacker plate...

Hi Guys,

Do i need to wacker plate my soil prior to putting down the hardcore for my sub base (for outbuilding)?

Im going for 150mm hardcore depth.... So how much do i need to put down so the final compacted depth is 150?

I would, yes. Dead quick compared to manually tamping it and a better result. Hard to say how much it’ll compact, depends on the material. Not massively, maybe 10-20mm with each pass of the whacker (maybe)

no. not unless your’e talking about loose soil you’ve put there. which you shouldn’t have done, if you did.
besides you cant whack soil , it’ll all get stuck to the plate.

So i wasnt meant to fill in the trench with the same stuff that came out of it?

not in my opinion no. not soil anyway. soil has no place in building. when it’s out it’s out. skip or garden.

No - as in filling around the edges with the dig out soil after the dpc blocks were laid....the hardcore will go on top of the soil.

Oops I misread the OP, no you don’t whack soil. Yes it’s ok to backfill the trench with soil. Yes the hardcore will reduce in depth a little bit as you whacker it. Can’t give an exact height it’ll reduce by though.
