Referring to the Anne Sacoolas issue, if she had remained in UK, then UK could have asked US to waive her diplomatic immunity and then she could have been prosecuted.
If US refused to waive her diplomatic immunity then UK could declare her personna non grata, and she would have to leave the country anyway. If she didn't she could be arrested.
The fact that she, apparently, left on her own accord, avoided any diplomatic issue, especially as it would appear that US would not have waived her diplomatic immunity.

How do you know precisely how she left? Whatever the circumstances of her departure and who knew...They all knew that diplomat protection was not designed to walk away from killing people..The whole affair stinks.Certainly hubby must have known.

I think it's reasonably obvious that she left by plane. :)

Diplomatic immunity is designed to protect one's own diplomats from prosecution or persecution under local laws., when abroad.
If one prosecutes or persecutes foreign diplomats, one's own diplomats are in danger when on active service abroad.

Apparently the said Iranian did not have diplomatic immunity in Belgium

If the wife of a U.K. diplomat in another country killed a young lad on a motorcycle and hot footed it back to the UK, would you think that fair, decent or moral? Would you want people like that representing the U.K.?

As previously said, it avoided a diplomatic issue between UK and US.

Police woman yevonne fletcher was murdered in the UK by Libiyans
With diplomatic immunity

Of course one of the biggest cases of ignoring diplomatic immunity was when the mad mullahs in Iran took over the US embassy in Tehran

so that bunch of fruit cakes whinging about this bloke getting 20 years in Belgium is a bit rich

If I had been in charge the mad mullers would have been given 48 hours to release the embassy staff or Iran would have gone back to the Stone Age ;)
