Kitchen Ventilation/Extraction

Had a visit from the Building Control people today. I am in the process of building an extension which will house a kitchen and a utility room and they want me to put in an extractor fan in both rooms 60 l p/sec for the kitchen and 30 l p/sec for the utility room.

The kitchen itself will have an island with an in build extractor fan but they are quite adamant that it needs to extract directly outside.

Its not a massive deal but could do without having to do this. Its a pitched roof extension with 2 velux windows in the kitchen 1.6m x 800 and 1 in the utility room. The utility room will only house a washing machine, tumble dryer and a sink.

Is there anyway around having to put two holes in the wall to accommodate these? As they will be on view I would have to get decent looking ones (not white) but won't if they are not necessary.

In my bathroom I have fitted one that automatically turns on and off whenever it needs to ie not connected to the lights, don't know if this kind of this is required.

Does anyone know?

I've already insulated the ceiling and its not really going to be possible to go up tbh.

I agree that the kitchen one is daft; it's just going to fight with the hob extract, but the utility room one is essential because you're not going to want to open a Velux every time you run a washer/dryer, and anyway, who cares what it looks like in a utility room.

Yeah the utility room, get that, reasonably easy to do that in there

Just need a decent wall mounted solution for the kitchen (limited wall space) that looks half decent (not a nasty white one) and i can put it in

I don't get it. The requirement is only that you provide a means of extract ventilation. You've done that, so what's the problem? Anyway, I like Helios Minivents (72 l/s, I think), but they're white, so maybe no good for you.

A hood which does not extract to outdoors, is entirely pointless. It will maybe trap some cooking grease, but the steam from cooking will simply be blown around the room and the rest of the house. A major source of condensation and mold on cold walls.

Maybe, but aesthetics and inconvenience are the criteria for the OP, not living in a mouldy, damp, stale air free environment.

I totally get it all really, obvs needs to vent externally BUT was kind of hoping that the expensive one i bought for the island would suffice, there is also windows in there which can be opened and these mahoosive velux windows.

All i really need is to find something a little funky looking that i can put on the wall that does not make my kitchen look like a toilet

Many hoods support a choice of working to either recirculate or extract. An open window, is not nearly as effective as a proper extract system, close to the source of moisture. In cold weather, when moisture causes most of the damage, few people open windows.

Looks like i have two option here

1. Get one that is non white for wall mounting and go direct out but i am now worried that it will be too close to the external patio doors (not too sure if this is an issue but i would guess there is a distance the external venting needs to be from an entrance)

2. Get one that is white for ceiling mounting and mount it so that it goes up and out through the soffit

Not too sure which way to jump on this one.

There's no problem of "short circuiting". If the patio doors are closed, the extract will work. If the patio doors are open, the extract is unnecessary. (So the hob hood doesn't extract to outside? How bonkers is that?)

Its not a hob hood, we are having a hob on the island with an electrically raised extractor that 'rises' up through the island. Its one of those charcoal ones.

I think i have found a half decent one made by Environvent called Silent Design SILDES150HT which has humidistat and timer so i will probably get two of those.

Wierd thing is that the building control said i need 30 l/s for utility and 60 l/s for kitchen. No one seems to rate them at these levels so i have worked out that i need 108 m3 and 216 m3 which this one would do so i will have to get two, one for utility and one for kitchen.

I have decided to go straight through the wall on these.

Do you mean it actually extracts the air and blows it outside the house?
