Is the correct way to roll walls to do it in a Z shape, then lay it off in one direction?

Also , do you just dip roller in paint (not totally emerse)? Also, not push hard at all just let roller do work

I got stains. Will two coats of bin come through emulsion if I cover it with that? I couldn't find my coverstain.

Put the emulsion in the tray and roll the roller forward into the paint and back onto the dry, then in the paint a few times so your roller is fully loaded but not dripping everywhere. Then do and N or M shape going over it and then a quick lay off. You shouldn't have to press too hard. Then a gentle lay off.
It looks to me like bare plaster? You should always apply a mist coat to this, which is a thinned down coat consisting of about 25% water.
Just put the zinsser on the stains and allow to dry, it won't show through but will take longer to dry in those areas.

I use a bucket or whatever they're called not a tray though.regarding watering down - do you measure exactly ? I tend to just guess . Is it better to edge on the side of too watery (more than 20% for example)?

Roughly measure. The paint usually recommends 10% but I always do about 20 or 25.
It helps the other coats stick better, if you just go straight on new plaster with the emulsion not watered down it is more likely to peel and crack!

Thxs. I'll add a bit more than recommended amount as I'm guessing. Maybe even 30 -40%.

Do you start in one corner then just head out until the whole ceiling or wall is covered? I tend to go over bits which haven't covered with mini roller .

Is lining paper a lot of work over bad walls still with dents and small bits of wallpaper left?

Yeah, from one side to the next. I prefer from right to left. Try and load up and get about 1m2 with each load. It should all cover so no need to use a mini roller.
Lining paper would help but even with lining paper it's best to get rid of as much off the wall first. Then you have to fill and sand any gaps in the lining paper.

I tend to not fully cover although it's new plaster so maybe going over bits not fully covered is needed. When you cut in do you go all from left to right or either way? I then quickly go over with mini roller as close to ceiling I can get it

Bare plaster soaks it all in so it may just look see through buf as long as you've thinned it down it will all be covered just see through. I cut in both ways. Left to right or right to left. Cut in before rollering. Don't go over where you think you've missed just do the next coat!

So dont touch up and effectively do one coat, go over the whole wall an hr later. I feel cutting in sometimes I go a smidgen (1mm) onto ceiling rather than exactly onto corner. The cutting in below is not as straight as previous.

Also, Been trying to do the bare plaster wall in one go rather than second coat which might be bit ambitious.

Yeah don't touch up. Just put 2 coats on top of that and don't over work the paint. Don't try and spread the paint too far, just dip the roller again and back on. If you've cut in slightly onto the ceiling then try and do it along the whole edge and not just in places.

So on bare plaster dont worry about completely covering it on first coat?

I'm confused, do you mean you've missed places? What sort of roller are you using? If you've missed places then you can touch it up with more mist coat if you like. If you've missed places it means you've tried to spread the paint too far!

The mist coat is supposed to be watery and sink in without leaving a coating on the surface. IMO it is best applied with a large soft brush rather than a roller.

Two mist coats are better than one. When the wall stops sucking the moisture out of your brush, you know you've done the job.

Not missed but just thin I guess so not totally covering. It is first coat mainly onto bare plaster. Out of interest, the plaster is 2-3 weeks old, all same colour (skimmed) so I assume dry so been putting vinyl emulsion with water added straight on, not contract first then vinyl watered down, is that ok? Put contract on most ceilings
