Hi all,

I moved into a new house last year and I’ve just noticed that around the overflow pipe from the upstairs boiler that a lot of the bricks have got like a white frost over them.

I haven’t noticed the overflow pipe leaking water but I’m concerned about the state of the bricks around the pipe.

could anyone put my mind at ease?

thank you,

rich

richierich81, good evening.

The "white material" is Efflorescence, or soluble salts. Worth a Google? not in any way serious, just a visual impact thing.

Can I ask? [not clear from the image posted but?] is that overflow sloping upwards, or downwards? should be slightly downwards, otherwise any overflowing water can run back along the outside of the pipe.

As an aside, I will probably get shot down for this??? but? I have assumed that a boiler overflow was supposed to be turned in so ant hot escaping water was fired back at the wall so as not to [in effect] jet out and possible scald someone or something?

That pipe doesn’t look like either the condensate pipe or the pressure relief pipe from a combi boiler, looks like an overflow from a header tank.

whats on the other side of that wall?

what's in the loft above?

does the pipe slope up, or down, where it leaves the wall?

The whitening, appears to be silicone in parts and paint?

Sorry. Thank you for the replies.

there is a tank in the loft for the hot water system I assume it is a cold water header tank.

there is also a hot water cylinder in the spare bedroom.
