evening all, next job on my list is adding two downlighters and another pendant light to a bedroom which already has one central light all controlled by one switch.

I've bought some 4 terminal 20a junction boxes.

I've run the cables from the downlighters and the additional pendant light so just need to connect them up

Could i take a spur from the original pendant to the junction box and then from that junction box feed the three new lights.

So run a spur cable from the original ceiling rose. Connecting its brown core to the same terminal as the switch drop blue core and its blue core to the neutral circuit cores. The earth core to the earth terminal.

At the new rose, connect the brown core to the terminal ‘live’ and the blue core to the terminal ‘neutral’. Take the earth core to the earth terminal.
Connect the live (brown) core of the pendant flex to the live terminal and the neutral (blue) core to the neutral terminal.

or feed one of the downlighters and the pendant from the junction box and then daisy chain the second downlighter from the other as they are literally 18inches apart at most.

the ceiling rose has 3 wires feeding it.

What's the reason for having an additional switch ?
Why not have all ceiling lights operated from existing switch ?

Ok ,then at the existing light position, run twin and earth cable , connecting live to switched live terminal ,neutral to neutral terminal, and earth to earth terminal. Take the twin and earth from there to the first " new" light fitting, then onto the second and so on.

ok thanks, ive done it a bit arse about face as at the weekend ive already measured and cut the cables i used 2.5mm T&E cable from each new light into one place where i was going to place the junction box, just thought i could connect all the lives together and neutrals etc in the junction box and then one wire from the original light ceiling rose and connect the wires from that to the junction box. I must have crawled around 3 inches of dust in the loft and i thought the dirty side had been done :)

You can do it with one cable from each light to a JB ,and one cable from the JB to the existing light fitting. You do not need 2.5²mm,and fitting 4 t&e of that size will be a tight squeeze in the JB terminals.

ok great thanks, first time ive done it so just want to make sure i have it my head correct, it was the switched live wire which was throwing me out and where i needed to connect that to in the junction box

As Terry says, you will struggle with 2.5mm cable. Most lighting circuits do not need any more than 1mm cable.

downlight terminals aren’t made for cable that big and, you’ll find, the cable does make fitting the downlights flush to ceiling a pain.

PS I don’t know why you need all those junction boxes.

thanks everyone, especially terry on messages to guide me. I've taken your advice and ordered 25m of 1.5mm T&E for delivery tomorrow, means i have to get up in the loft and move all the insulation out of the way again but should have asked before i did it.

So now i have the correct wire, i can just daisy chain from the main light to all the others.

1mm would be easier. I’m sure that was the size I suggested.
Nothing wrong electrically with having a cable too big for the job - it just makes the job harder. you’ll learn.

OK ;) ordered the 1mm T&E, i'd rather listen now then come back and still be struggling. thanks
