Power Flush before new boiler

Is a power flush compulsory before the replacement of a combi boiler? The existing combi boiler has a magna clean on it.

Doesn’t it invalidate the warranty on new boilers? Isn’t that the first thing they will point out if asked to repair under warranty?

1. To an extent it depends on the manufacturer's instructions. If you know what boiler you are getting, look up the installation instructions.
2. I believe all require the system to be cleaned before the new system is initiated.
3. There is a British Standard (BS7593:2019) for cleaning the system, but this does not demand a power flush. A mains flush is sufficient, as is a flush using the normal circulation pump.
4. My own preference is for a power flush, preferably done while the old boiler is still running, so that it can be done hot, which is far more effective.
5. However, if your Magnaclean has been regularly checked and any debris, then your system should be pretty clean.
6. A flush of the entire system after installation but before first use is essential to remove any flux / copper filings / other debris introduced by the installation process. A mains flush is sufficient for this in my opinion.

How often should the magnaclean be cleaned?

I am looking at a Ideal or Worcester Bosch combi boiler and have had mixed accounts from plumbers on the necessity of a power flush. It adds £400 to the installation cost.

1. A mains flush uses the pressure of the cold water mains to flush water through the system, whereas a power flush uses a high flow rate pump.
2. Magnaclean should be checked / cleaned a couple of time a year, and more frequently after first installation.
3. A powerflush takes a day for a typical 10 radiator system, so £400 is a reasonable quote.

One related question please, when Ideal or Worcester state that they have a 5 year warranty, does this mean that if there are any issues with the boiler in this period, they will come out to fix this free of charge?
Presumably as many times as is required during this period...

In theory manufacturers will need to come and repair it free as long as you have complied with their terms!

Normally it needs to be installed in accordance with their instructions. Then serviced by a registered engineer every year and the service record completed.

But normally the owner would first call the installer who would come and see what the issue was and then call the manufacturer if their part has failed.

A system with a Magnetic filter should stay clean and the system might not need any further cleaning. But the makers instructions do require the use of suitable cleaning chemicals. Often these do not need to be used in conjunction with a power flushing pump or mains pressure and just run in the system for a few days while it is still operating ( if that is possible ). But a good installer will know how to deal with the cleaning.
