I’ve just cleared out and tidied up our understairs cupboard and now the electricity meter is 'beeping' every 45 seconds or so. Can’t see that I’ve knocked it at all. There usually one red light blinking on it as far as I can remember but now there’s two. One of them is blinking on the 'wan' light. Any ideas?

Might that be a cable from the gas meter disturbed?

Just a thought but I have no working knowledge of how these are integrated so I could be writing total rubbish.

How old is it?

I'd guess poor signal, or low battery.

If it still is beeping tomorrow, check if its updated your Ovo account with todays figures

Could that 'wan' refer to Wide Area Network, in which case it might be indicating a communication problem?

Can you tell us the make and model of the meter?

Kind Regards, John

Thanks all but it’s all sorted now - it wasn’t the meter! About 2 years ago I fitted new smoke alarms to the hall and landing as the old ones were at least 10 years old. I fitted one of the old smoke alarms in the understairs cupboard. Why it chose to beep after I had just cleared it out must have just been bad luck. I fitted a new battery and it didn’t work at all so I’ve binned it.

I once spent 2 evenings looking through everything in the house for something similar, not sure when it started but started hearing it after the noise of cooking and washing up etc had finished. It turned out to be a neighbouring properties intruder alarm which had been rewired onto a lighting circuit on a timeswitch.

Similar here. A couple of years ago, something started bleeping loudly in my (very large, and very 'cluttered') cellar and, perhaps because of 'echoes' etc., it proved very difficult to determine where it was coming from. After a couple of days of haunting through countless stacked boxes etc., I eventually found (inevitably in one of the last boxes I examined!) an old battery-operated 'portable PUR alarm' which had the battery left in it - and, after a year or five, had started trying to tell me that the battery needed replacing!!

This happens and sometimes surprisingly much later than would be expected. One of my radiomics with fitted rechargeable NiCad battery pack hadn't been touched for maybe 20 years, I was very surprised the LED just about glowed when I switched it on. Especially bearing in mind I was getting a couple of years out of a pack while in regular use. I changed a PP£ size battery in a tone tracer last year as it was sounding weak. The Duracell didn't have a date on it so had to be well over 25 years old.
And a smoke detector in my rental property (I write dates on things!) original battery fitted 2006 still working when I replaced detector last year.

The smoke detectors I fitted a few years go have a battery life of 10 years.

Yes all of mine do now but the type I replaced I didn't expect 2 years. The managing agent were supposed to inspect and replace at 1 year. It's what I did at home too.
