Do I have to take off the little bit of red plastic at the top of the tap first?

Is there a screw underneath?


Or do I get a thin spanner an undo it that way? (I tried that without apparent success)

I don't want to go at this too roughly and leave marks behind.

The mechanism is very stiff and I want to try a little lubricant and gentle motion.

Ill bet you a virtual Pound that either the screw is seized, or the tap head is seized to the shaft.
Bin them, treat yourself to a new pair.

Snapped a couple of utility knife blades trying to get them out.

Might it be that those "lids" are just for decoration (and to indicate hot vs cold) in this case?


I have tried a Stanley blade and it gives no indication at all of wanting to come off-the plastic just chips and even the enamel on the tap itself is starting to chip.

It can't be the spanner job can it ?(I tried that also in the past and it didn't seem to disassemble the tap either, although it did turn

No harm in it, a bit of a bodge, but only you looking at it.

Screw a self tapping screw through the centre of the plastic ,it may jack it out
