Thats not quite true.
In terms of origin, English are probably the largest ethnic group.
The reason they don't show up in these surveys or the national census is because they simply identify as American.
Of the top 10 surnames in the U.S. 7 are English and the other 3 Hispanic.
English placenames are also the most common.
German is probably the 2nd largest ethnic origin.
Of those who claim Irish descent, less than half are Irish Catholic.
