What to do with toilet/bathroom?!

Hi all,

I'm moving into our new project house no.48 next week, and the Wife and I still can't agree on what we should do with the toilet / bathroom.

Current Layout:

I'm not sure if they used the Bidet, but if so the trip from the toilet to the bathroom leaves much to the imagination.

We are looking at extending (double height extension) out the back of the bathroom in 2-4 years, so doing a complete remodel seems a low ROI as we will knock through it.

The conundrum is what to do in the meantime.

Current bathroom:

Idea:
- We cant' decide on what to do whether to rip out or somehow polish it up.

Current Toilet:

Idea:
- Remove floor tiles, and replace with some new grey concrete style we already have.
- Remove wall tiles and install wall paneling after repairing the wall- in a dark blue.
- Have someone install a new toilet.
- Remove wallpaper and re-wallpaper in something nicer!
- Install a small sink

Would be good to get some ideas/ thoughts on what we could/should do. Cost wise is limited as saving up for a full extension, we have a month off to get some of the work done.

If it's functional and not leaking then a bloomin good clean, bleach the grout/replace the mouldy silicone and spend money on other things. Anything else is just pouring money down the drain surely, so to speak!

I’d suggest giving it all a jolly good clean, and re-siliconing the bath.

Leave rest as it is if you are genuinely planning to actually doing an extension.

If the extension is more of a pipe dream, consider knocking the two rooms into one, put toilet where the bidet is, and have the space where the former toilet room is as a walk in shower.

Thanks, an extension will happen, will convert the loft, so double height may be less of a priority - probably a nice to have!

My guess is about 10k to knock the rooms together for your idea Andy. Which takes out the budget for the extension.

I think it might need to be a clean it, re-silicon and see how the fittings come up/ and if nothing is leaking. Then leave it to wait for the extension.

Assuming it’s not a structural wall, you could knock them together using elbow grease, a new door frame and a few quid chucked at an electric (to move the light switch) and a plasterer (to make good the holes).

You’d struggle to spend £1k doing that…and then the replacement bathroom suite would costs as much or as little as your taste dictates

I always wonder why there is no sink in those toilet rooms.
And I never like to consider the door handles between the toilet and the sink in the other room.


If you have a family and need more than one toilet, you could in the bathroom put a toilet where the bidet is and also keep the toilet room (take pipes from under bath and though wall to add a small sink).

Issue is normally 'where is the soil pipe'.

It would more be, I get the toilet and tiny sink (showering using a hose outside) and she would get the perfectly done new bathroom!!

Putting the WC in that corner could work well. I'm not too worried about a bidet having gone 33 years without one!

Knocking through to create a bigger bathroom would make a nice space. In our place now the loft conversion we did the stairs ended up having to double back which wasted space, so I think if I do the bigger bathroom I need to check enough space for stairs. If there is enough space, then it's just a cost analysis if we can get a bigger bathroom within that cost. Double extension doesn't look likely as planning rejected the last few, only 1 house in the road of 150 has one that I can't find an application for.

Not much width to have the usual wash basin. Our downstairs toilet is a similar width, with the essential small wash basin on the right, radiator on the left - it makes for tricky manoeuvring. I have always thought how much better it would be with a hinged, folding wash basin - one which empties as you hinge it up, caravan style.
