Just doing this online as the DVLA have told Mum it'll take weeks by post.

The online application says cut up DL now and send it back.

But the paper form makes no mention of this.

What's going on?

If I were you I'd hang on to the old DL (perhaps for ID etc purposes) until you receive the new licence. IIRC in the online system you agree to cut up and return the old DL, but there's no time limit on that.

Thanks Alec.

Crazy to have no mention of it on the paper form.

If your mum is making a new medical declaration, the online app will be passed to the medical department for consideration which will delay things as they have a large backlog. If your mum is fit without any medical declaration, it should be processed automatically and be issued relatively quickly.

If you have applied online, you will receive a letter requiring you to cut your licence in half, and return it to the DVLA.

If you do not return it, your licence application will be on hold until you do.

This should be on the form or notes, when you filled in the online form.

Your licence may take up to 11 weeks to return, at the moment.

EDIT: Send it by recorded post.

Hang onto it.

Yes, hung on to it.
My friend was told he'd never had a licence.
Fortunately his insurance and his bank had a copy of it and after a lot of aggravation the dvla eventually admitted there had been an IT error.
No apology offered.

I held on to my paper licence when they changed mine to a photo one despite being asked to return it.
I still have it in my memory box upstairs and my photo one arrived within about 10 days. Mind you, it was about 8-9 years ago.

Doug: she has no medical issues

Trazor: all it said was that you will agree to send it back, with no stipulation of when.
I did ring them several times but they said they were busy and cut me off.

If we have to send it back, I will make a colour copy of it in case it goes missing.....

If you have only just applied, you will soon receive a letter asking to return your licence ( cut in half)

Your application WILL be held up, until you return it.

The crazy thing is, there is absolutely nothing about this written on the paper form.

What if you ask Eddie Scissorhands to send your licence back and then you get stopped by the rozzers?

It's crazy not to keep one until you receive the other.

Especially when the incompetents tell you you never had a licence and you have sent it back so have no proof you ever did........

1) I don't think it's true

2) Just make the application, wait a week, see if you get a reminder. Or if the new licence just turns up.
