If you have only just applied, you will soon receive a letter asking to return your licence ( cut in half)

your application WILL be held up, until you return it.

I bet you 50p it won't.

payment to a charity of your choice.

The crazy thing is, there is absolutely nothing about this written on the paper form.

What if you ask Eddie Scissorhands to send your licence back and then you get stopped by the rozzers?

It's crazy not to keep one until you receive the other.

Especially when the incompetents tell you you never had a licence and you have sent it back so have no proof you ever did........

I spoke to the DVLA earlier tonight, they confirmed the application I made for my Father. (on the 6th of August)

Return of Licence will be 10 to 11 weeks, minimum.

If the Licence has not turned up after 10 weeks, I am to ring, and the DVLA will take my Royal mail reference number and investigate the whereabouts of said Licence.

Ring them and ask, that is what I did.

I did, several times. And was cut off several times.

Yes, it's frustrating.

They are so busy, that you don't get to join the queue.

Eventually, after numerous tries, it rings instead of the automated message which cuts you off.

Just doing this online as the DVLA have told Mum it'll take weeks by post.

The online application says cut up DL now and send it back.

But the paper form makes no mention of this.

What's going on?

The DVLA already have a major backlog of applications. They will not want to add to it by waiting for an old licence to be returned. New licences have issue numbers which will automatically cancel the previous lic on issue. As the licence holder is not making any new medical declaration, the online app would be processed without delay.

Did your father have any medical conditions which may have delayed the application?

None, just a straight forward renewal.

I spoke to them on the phone, this is what they said.

10 to 11 weeks was the present waiting time, ( application went in online on the 6th August ).

If the licence was not received after 10 weeks, I was told to ring back, they would then investigate the whereabouts of the licence with Royal mail.
By that, I assumed that renewal of the licence was dependant on them receiving it.

I sent the licence, signed for, I have the receipt, and a scrawled online signature.

Make of what they said, as you will.

Unfortunately a signature only confirms delivery to the already large backlog :(

Mum got her licence extremely quickly.

No letter asking for the old one, though she will send it back.
