Afternoon Everyone,

We are currently installing a new roof.
The roof tiles being used are Sandtoft Rivius Slate Clay interlocking tiles (minimum pitch specified is 22.5 degrees)

We have now noticed that the pitch of the roof is 18 degrees. Roof construction is 22mm sarking boards, Roofshield, counter battens, tile battens.

Sarking, Roofshield and counter battens have already been fitted.
Does anyone have any experience using these tiles at less than the manufacturers minimum pitch? Or any other tiles at below recommended pitch?

Do you think these would do the job at that pitch? 12 pallets have already been loaded onto the scaffolding….

That looks like it would solve the issue. And would save removing and and getting new tiles delivered.

We would need 5 rolls of the stuff though - costing an extra £2000!

Have you ever laid tiles at a lower pitch than recommended, without the extra membrane, and been ok?

Nope, always stick to the minimum pitch unless specified by an architect. Which is how I know of that felt.

No, why would you? Building Control are likely to frown upon it somewhat also.

We build all our roofs with the tile in mind and its availability. 18 degrees means your choice of tile is limited. Don't forget to consider tile head-lap, roof complexities and rafter length when building shallower pitched roofs.

To make this work with tiles below their minimum pitch, you would need to treat the sarking boards as a flat roof and fit a suitable layer with sealed laps. Then counter battens and your tile battens.

Looks like we are are gonna remove the counter battens and lay a layer of Klober permo extreme membrane - sealing joints and using butyl tape to seal any nail holes. Then counter batten & batten as normal…

Id felt over the counter battens

Felting over the battens would be a lot easier. It just seems a bit “bodged” to me. You going over the counter battens would be ok? would you pull the membrane right or let it drape between counter battens?

would you just cut the klober above eaves trays?

Oh BTW, one bloke in Devon has not heard of how to use tiles below their minimum pitch and swears that no one else down there has either. So to be safe this method only applies to the other 47 counties of England, Wales as a whole any most likely Scotland too.

No I mean board, counter batten , torch on over the roof. Then batten and tile it.
The torchon keeps the water out
