£350 pm to put up a Ukrainian refugee

Me and my wife have genuinely thought about this, we've got 2 spare rooms, nice area and community, a strong eastern European community nearby to.

The issue is the additional cost, heating, food gas and electric, and with everything going up so much it's just not really viable.
Why would the heating and electric be that much more?

We are all in for massive rises anyway...

And cooking for say two more doesn't double the cost of food...

£350 pm should make it viable

People wanting to do the scheme have to find the Ukrainian refugees themselves. WTF - how are you supposed to do that?

And from what I hear it has to be a guarantee for 3 years period.
It's not 3 years, it's 6 months...

As to how you find out, then google is your friend for contacts...

We read about a Ukranian chef (who is of russian origin and works with a russian), but both are behind #CookForUkraine...

Olia Hercules

We are waiting for a reply as to possible contacts after the (still limited) details of the scheme were released today...

I have two spare bedrooms and I'm alone in the place at the moment, though one is used as a sort of office space come small repair bench, come print room. I briefly considered I could 'let' the back double bedroom, but on giving it more thought - I have a new Filipino partner on the verge of moving in (if all goes to plan), so it wouldn't be easy. If the £350 is per adult, it is certainly doable.

I made a big donation last week.

Prior to seeing so many Ukrainian faces and towns on TV, I had a picture in my mind of a a fairly backward country of Slavic looking peoples. They do look very much like us. My only prior experience of a Ukrainian, was my first partners unofficial step father, who came here as a refugee during WWII - a man mountain of a guy. He offered me help decades ago when I was erecting a pre-fab garage. The panels weighed around 2cwt each, so I welded up a set of wheels to lift them and move them to their positions. He would have none of it, he picked the first one up and me, with me clinging on to it trying to help :-)

Is he/she waiting for the money to clear??

Andy - Why don't you grow up and keep your offensive remarks to yourself. Note- your comments were and are normally blocked, I unblocked you for this one single post, to see if you had matured any. You obviously haven't!

Lots of virtue signaling on show, but no mention of how it is to be paid for.

£10K per person to the local authority, from central government. So tax or cuts. We're serious about doing it- if we can. We have the space and the time. £350/month will be nice, but we had decided before that was mentioned. Daughter and boyfriend are in too, but are leaning towards renting a flat for 6 months, and housing a family there- they don't have the space.

As for "What's your refugee's name?", I believe charities and NGOs will get on that. A quick google will throw up local groups that already exist.

It’s not good that the govt has left it to people to find Ukrainian refugees to house. One person I heard on the radio said they have made contact through their church - churches have great global connections including in Ukraine and Poland - so it may be worth you contacting your local parish

I am fairly certain they will have benefits quick sharp; and many will want to work.
Ukraine has (had) one the highest levels of education in Europe - and it has some top ten universities.

Lots of them will be highly educated and well qualified.

Are you happy for there to be higher taxes or cuts? What do you think about the current huge increases in petrol, diesel, gas and electric prices, NI increases the reduction of income tax personal allowance thresholds ?

and many will want to work.

We already have millions of unemployed people; the vast majority of them in receipt of public money - that same public money you want for refugees.

Hypocrite, you hate churches and religion!

The £350 is for your whole property, regardless of how many you take. So renting a flat for them wouldn't be a good idea. Seems odd. They should all be able to claim Universal credit but not housing benefit. So they should be able to pay for their own food - it's not clear as far as I've seen so far. Well, £350 would could be enough to partly feed them and heat them. Their first spending would be for clothes, school uniforms...?? They'd probably be horrified what a cabbage costs!
The £350 is for a limited period, too:sick:.

Must hit ebay for Ukranian dictionaries!

I can only really see that they'll slot in as tenants in "spare" buildings, so all that legislation would automatically apply or we'd have to draw up a new load. That would mean you could have problems getting them out if they had nowhere else to go. I can't see them being ABLE to go back in 6 months because their country won't be ready whatever happens. And by the time they've been here 2 years and settled into schools and jobs, and antagonized half their "sponsors" deperate to for them to move on, it could all get a bit tetchy.

I'm surprised you said that in what appears to be an unironic way. In what sense did you think they were different?

Some one has mentioned ?? Else where

if you take in a refugee would they be classified as lodgers

you are being paid ?

Would you require a gas safety certificate for your prop ????

could well be other potential legal issues ???????
