Sorry if I haven't described this problem well - I am a DIYer.
We have a small porch at the front of our house that needs replacing. I am considering replacing (well maybe not the roof) it like for like. While the upright timbers are pretty rotten throughout, it is worse at the bottom, which I kind of understand because it just sat on the concrete floor, soaking up any water after rain/snow/etc.
If I replace the two pillars with similar sized bits of wood, what should I sit them on? If I sit them on the concrete floor, they will just get wet again and I'll have the same problem in a few years.
Please bear in mind my skill level
