Sorry if I haven't described this problem well - I am a DIYer.

We have a small porch at the front of our house that needs replacing. I am considering replacing (well maybe not the roof) it like for like. While the upright timbers are pretty rotten throughout, it is worse at the bottom, which I kind of understand because it just sat on the concrete floor, soaking up any water after rain/snow/etc.

If I replace the two pillars with similar sized bits of wood, what should I sit them on? If I sit them on the concrete floor, they will just get wet again and I'll have the same problem in a few years.

Please bear in mind my skill level :)

Free standing on a piece of lead sheet. Trim the lead to the exact size of the post. ( the photo was taken before the trimming was finished )

The lead seals the end grain of the timber. This was done 40 years ago and the timber which was Tanalised and coated with Sadolin Classic is still in good condition.

OP,
google "metal post holders".

If you are thinking of the surface mounted 'boot' I would suggest putting an inch of gravel in the bottom to raise the post up. This will allow any water that runs down the inside to drain away rather than the wood sit in a pool.

Various sizes and finish available. Also other suppliers.
