Artichoke And Other Foods Said To Aid Weight Loss

I have done well on the 5:2 'lifestyle...

But it's back to willpower... For years I have been able to do 2 days on 600 kcals. I wouldn't want to do a manual job on those days. But I'm a skinny bloke 1.75m who went to 75kgs. That was 5 kgs above what my clothes had fit for 35 years! Bad look, really skinny bloke with a pot. I was in my 50s. I lost the 5kgs over about 3 months. My wife joined me, so it was easier as a process. We did Monday and Thursday each week.

On food, it's very clear to me that heavily processed foods are addictive, leave you unsatisfied and wanting more. There's research.* Mosely did another series on eater-types. I'm the type that has to eat the the whole pack of biscuits; or the family bag of M&Ms.

*
Plenty of non-scientific 'tests', but the American guy did 'proper' research. Gave 2 groups processed or unprocessed food with exactly the same calories/food groups/ minerals/ nutrients in. Th processed eaters piled it on.

fat and oil are very high in calories

what makes you think that high-calorie ingredients are conducive to weight loss?

People read stuff in books, online, hear it from friends. A thousand different ways to cheat the system. People advise guys that are trying already, trying their best, to forget about training....it's just about calorie deficit. Mens health mag has a new bi cep curl method every other month.
Nosey had one of the best observations about this (did I just say that?) Tummy gets a bit bigger, leave out the crisps and choccy bar at lunch...summit along those lines. Mr Secure is doing OK, steady loss that is maintainable. He's not yet at a point though where a certain type of veg is critical.

A large part of the obesity problem in this country is due to successive governments falling for the fallacy that fat is bad. Fat was reduced in foods and replaced with sugar, which a lot of people are now hooked on. Sugar is much worse than fat. Calories in - calories out is also (partly) a fallacy because the body deals with different foods in different ways.

The body needs energy to work and produces energy from sugars, carbs, fats and proteins - in that order. If you are always topped up with sugars and carbs the body will not burn fats. If you want to burn fat, reduce your intake of sugars and carbs and do some exercise. It doesn't need to be running marathons - just move a bit more than normal. As somebody said earlier, it is also a fallacy that you lose weight by exercising. You do of course but as a weight-loss plan it's a non starter. The only way is to moderate your intake. If you reduce sugars and carbs and walk or cycle to the shop instead of driving you will deplete your body of energy and it will start burning fats.

Whatever you do, don't follow some fad diet - or any other type of diet. You should look, honestly, at the foods you consume and work out what's in it. Just cut down on the unnecessary sugars and carbs and processed stuff. Mostly you don't need to cut things out - just reduce the regularity. Eat less bread - especially white bread. Also eat less rice. There's a substitute for rice called Konjac rice, which is very, very good for you because it is basically pure soluble fibre. Also eat less pasta. Two things are the exception to cutting things out altogether; Biscuits - you don't need them. Cut them out. Sugary drinks - you don't need them. Cut them out.

Finally, feed your body with fibre - especially soluble fibre. Technically fibre is a carb but it's not the same as ordinary carbs. Soluble fibre feeds your gut microbiome which is central to a healthy metabolism. A healthy microbiome is also beneficial for many other things, including fighting diseases. It is also proven to increase the production of dopamine, which makes you happier and improves mental health and higher cognitive function - which quite a few people on here could do with.

This is mostly all you need to start with. YooToob is full of dietary advice, some of it is even from highly respectable sources.

When I'm out & about with the dogs I'm almost constantly engaging with the overweights out for their 1st or 2nd jog resplendant in all the latest sports fashion. Your diet & your portion control is the way to lose weight, jogging is probably the worst way to lose weight & not all that good a way to get fit.

Sort yourself out a well balanced & healthy diet, then go swimming or cycling to get yourself fit.

Hell of a lot more to it than calorie deficit, which you soon find out if you're serious.

I've gone back to eating butter rather than low fat (or low taste) spreads. Trying to get SWMBO to stop buying low fat items such as cheese and mayonnaise.

It's the "busy females" attitude to food & advertising that is killing us.

I have a few mates who do ALL of the food shopping, almost all of the rest of 'em at least accompany their better halfs on the trip round the aisles.

fat and oil are very high in calories

there are 100 calories in 25g of sugar
there are 220 calories in 25g of olive oil
There are 4 calories in 25g of tomatoes

what makes you think that high-calorie ingredients are conducive to weight loss?

Aren't Avocados high fat but good fat?

LDL and HDL come into it: bad cholesterol and good cholesterol.

I am trialling a fasting day today.

810 calories.

I'll let you know in the morning how it goes.

Feeling OK at the moment.

Do a lot of fasting. It works. You never see fat Japanese POW's

That's about it. Katie Hopkins deliberately over-ate and put on four stones in weight, and then fasted and lost the four stones, to show that it can be done.

Even if you don't do 12 hours at least you have given your digestive system a rest.

I'm getting good at this fasting thing.

Also look at the benefits of Chewing your food. More you chew the more saliva you produce the better your digestive system works.

Don't drink with your meals either.
