Artichoke And Other Foods Said To Aid Weight Loss

I've always eaten fairly quickly, dinner time I find boring, I just want to get going and off doing things! But eating slow is supposed to be much better isn't it? Gives the brain time to register being full and then (hopefully) stop eating.
Hey Sod, nice to see you back. How’s the teeth, how’s the cat?

Lol, the things you remember about me! Cheers :)
Teeth ok, cat still with us. She's not doing too bad but it's a struggle to get her to eat most of the time. She's enjoying life tho, chasing rats and rolling around the catnip so that's what counts. You ok? Who is Himmy going by these days? Grins.

I am also considering Michael Moseley's Mediterranean 5:2 diet, where he advocates eating stuff like oily fish, vegetables, Greek yogurt, EV olive oil etc...

Mrs Secure said the fasting days should be back to back, but I think that might be a bit brutal.

I am limited as regards walking, but I could cycle 45 minutes semi-briskly.

Did my first ride out the other day in 13 years and was a bit wobbly...was out for around 40 minutes and when I got back and dismounted, my body did an impersonation of what it felt like when I dismounted at the finish line in Blackpool (having started in Manchester) all those 13 years ago.

Sounds like you should be posting daily doggy bags over to Mottie Mansions...!
The fasting days don’t have to be back to back. It’s simple sums. 2600 BMR dropping to 600 twice a week gives you a 4000kcal deficit, which is roughly 1.2lb per week.

Well, here I am! I survived the night.

810 calories was OK. But I'm not sure I can eat enough of my target amounts (eg protein, vitamins etc) on that low a count.
this is useful in seeing what's going on during the fasting hours. Assume no food after 2000 on the normal day... So, use up the first 12 hours watching tv and sleeping, and every hour thereafter till the next meal is fat burning.

Nah that wasn't quite it iirc, she reckoned that yer body got used to 2400 or whatever and carried on using that much, whereas if you averaged it out the bod would slow down consumption. Something like that.

which would be completely wrong. You can't make your body burn less calories for the same activity. Just as you can't "kick start" your metabolism by eating certain foods.

There is no doubt that many people who find it difficult to lose weight are just not being honest with themselves. Time and time again you will find people who don't lose weight will be the same people that claim to have a 'slow metabolism' or some other spurious medical condition. In reality they are just eating rubbish and snacking on sweet stuff in between. But that doesn't mean losing weight is the same for all people or that all bodies are the same. A while back I read some research which followed on from people that had bariatric surgery. Apparently it was noticed that a large percentage of them said that they did not feel as hungry as they used to. The research was looking to see if there was a chemical reaction going on that could be replicated. It seems obvious but if somebody is less hungry then they are going to want to eat less - or less often.

Cranks the lot of you.

Love how this thread dives into different foods and their effects — it’s true that no single item (even artichokes) is a magic bullet for weight loss. What really matters is the overall pattern: balanced meals, satiety, and sustainable habits. For some people, including more fiber‑rich veggies changes how they feel and helps control cravings. It’s like many lifestyle topics I’ve seen on https://wellness-app.com/ free fasting apps — small consistent choices matter much more than quick fixes. Keep experimenting and sharing what works for you!
thanks for the information!

I do have a very complex medical history, including a whole series of hormonal issues. Losing weight for me has been difficult by small reductions.
People say it's simple maths, eat less, lose weight.

I couldn't lose weight with small reductions in calories, but by making large reductions and having a day not eating here and there, I have lost a fair bit recently, but the visceral fat is still stubbornly refusing to shift.

I lost nearly 25½ kg in hospital when I broke my ankle by the time I left on December 23rd 2024. At that point I weighed 147.0kg (yes, I was ridiculously overweight....).

I now weigh every Friday morning and my weight last week was 142.0kg.

I certainly feel much better. I move much more easily and can swim half a kilometer in a quicker time. But when I see myself in the mirror, I don't see a massive difference.

Still, I am not put off.

Still not sure you listened to my last advice about your other medical issue i tried to help with, that aside.

I gather you have tried intermitent fasting, as above it seems to have worked for you 'involuntarily'. There are many benefits including dropping your blood sugar levels right down, helping with insulin related issues (reversing diabetes) and crucial 'housekeeping' functions such as autophagy.

It also helps address those food cravings which in turn give you more control. I am guessing you have discussed GLP1's and peptides eg fat loss drugs you can 'shoot up' with. Mounjaro Wegovy etc, and not forgetting Retatutride.

Ive seen some incredible results from these, but none of us know the mid term or longer term complications for sure, i know there have been cases loss of sight sight issues, and gallbladder.

However, your weight currently carries so many side effects i am sure you are aware of. My penneth worth would be if you hven't already, even short term use one of those methods GLP/Peptide to cut 20/30kg asap. Obviously do your own research and make sure you have a good doctor that isn't just googling as you sit there talking to them. Get that body weight down asap, it is killing you, it ****es me off people pussy foot round obese people, it's a mental challenge i know and only you can change it. Do it now, you only have one life.

My biggest issue is walking.

I have CP, hence why I swim more.

I'm not prepared to take GLPs. But I sure am determined to lose weight naturally. I don't want to take extra meds, one, because I currently take 29 meds a day as it is and don't want more. Two, I don't want to risk any of the side effects, like blindness.

Nobody ever pussyfoots around me!
Every medical professional I have met has been most blunt and asked me straight out if I am diabetic. I am not. The closest I ever got was to be prediabetic, but my HbA1c has now dropped to within normal range to 40.

OK good luck, and i understand CP is more of a challenge for you, but even if you didn't have this holding you back, you cannot ever out exercise a bad diet eg high calorie/calories burnt, not even a marathon a day. Swimming etc is helping your circulation and other areas but not possibly helping that much bring your weight down, you need to bring it down ASAP. Drink lots of decaf Green tea. Either cold brewed in 1litre overnight with lemon or just on it's own.
Write a strict journal of each day never graze. Intermittent fast. See what it shows over a week. Not rocket science but neither is a calorie deficit, which is all you need to absolutely stick to.

Most people need a better strategy than simply being told to eat less. I personally found fasting works and also gave me performance gains in sports.

There are lots of strategies from using a smaller bowl , eating slowly, not buying bad foods like biscuits and snacks. Etc.
