I don't agree with Andy on much (hardly anything truth be told) however on this I do agree that encounter was uncomfortable to watch. There does appear to be something a little sinister going on here. I'm not sure whether it comes from a place of genuinely wanting everyone to feel comfortable/included or if there's something else at play.
Some of you might have seen the recent article I've linked to below. Yes it's in the DM however other outlets have reported on in and the university in question has replied, so it appears to be genuine. Although a few 'suggestions' in their list give me the creeps, the one on changing 'Christmas closure' to 'winter closure' is particularly disappointing to see. Whilst less people identify as Christian these days and even fewer will think about what Christmas actually means (on a spiritual level if you like) everyone I know refers to it as 'the Christmas holidays'. To 'suggest' we start referring to it as 'the winter holidays' so as not to offend other religions gets my hackles up.
Or let's look at it this way then. To ensure parity,
every religion should be given advice by our councils not to use the historic name for their annual celebrations in case it offends people of other beliefs etc.
However, we all know
that won't happen ...
What the authorities need to get their thick heads around is the fact that, if we try to suggest/legislate into society a means of communicating that is intended to never offend anyone in the slightest, we're going to end up in a vanilla, roboticised society.
Perhaps that's the plan ...
The University of Brighton has guided staff not to say 'Christmas' this year as it may offend some students - instead asking them to call it the 'winter closure period'.
