Doorbell Wired to Mains?

I want to remove my doorbell chime box from the hallway as my doorbell has never worked and is not required. I can't work out if it is wired to the mains as it appears to have a transformer in the middle however there are acid marks on the battery connectors.

I want to remove the unit, snip back any wires and tuck them into the wall to be painted over.

It is the solenoid that makes the "ding dong" - the bell box is battery powered
