Is it just one switch?

Were three wires twisted together, and one was on it's own?

I can’t remember There are 4 brown wires coming from 4 wires. …

It looks to me like the three brown wires with the twisted ends go in one side of the switch
and
the brown wire the 'straight' end goes in the other end of the switch.

Answer these questions before you do anything:
What terminal markings are on the switch?
Is the switch plastic or metal?

Switch is metal and I’ve attached image … really appreciate your help here x

Insert three of the twisted brown wires into COM and the remaining one put it in L1. (Power off ofc and report back here when you're done.)

In your photo, from left to right, as the wires are arranged. 1, 3, and 4 to the COM terminal. 2 (the straight one) goes to L1. As others have suggested.

In your photo of the rear of the switch, the brass terminal in the top left corner, MUST be connected to the wires sleeved with green/yellow, as MUST also the metal box in the wall.

Is this the only switch operating the light or is there another one elsewhere?

Something like top and bottom of stairs?

I imagine not and feel Harry and Jurassicspark are on the right lines.
