I don't really follow the news but I think I have got to the bottom of this. Apparently Trump said during the election that millions of criminals were entering the USA from foreign countries. Also, at his inauguration apparently he said this:

First, I will declare a national emergency at our southern border. All illegal entry will immediately be halted and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came.

But it turns out to be more Trumpian BS. Because there simply aren't millions and millions of criminal aliens in the USA.

And I suppose this ties in neatly with the discussion on another thread about how the right use culture wars. It is not enough for Trump to say that he will deport millions of undocumented aliens. He has to go much further and stir up hatred by wrongly stating that millions of them are criminals.

I did check that before posting, but the answer seems to be no according to this. I haven't double checked with another source. But they could always pass a new law to make it come true for Trump. Even it was, though, that is clearly not what Trump wanted people to take from his comments.

To deport millions of "criminals," Trump would have to consider all undocumented immigrants as criminals. But being in the U.S. illegally is a civil violation, not a criminal one.

Trump's getting them out, he's being proactive about it. Our lot talk about getting them out, yeah one thing our lot are tier one at is talking, talking talking talking with zero ACTION.

No doubt if this lot were located in the UK we'd have do-gooder lawyers and tree-hugging groups doing everything in their power to stop them being deported.

So I have checked some more and it is complicated. If they enter the USA illegally that is a misdemeanour. Being in the USA undocumented isn't a crime. So technically a proportion are criminals. But I would still stick my assertion that is not what Trump wanted people to believe with all his talk of rapists and murderers.

Trump's getting them out, he's being proactive about it.

He's making a big show of it. But these dangerous types would have been arrested anyway. This is nothing new. The authorities knew where they were. These arrests go on every day, it's just not publicised.
