They used to plug things into the lights in those days.

True. Until my Dad put a spur in the garage, his Qualcast rechargeable cylinder mower with a 12v car battery was plugged into the batten light fitting. You could buy a special plug.

With parents like mine - how I've lived to tell the tale, I'll never know.

The issue here will be no earthing in the lighting circuits. So you'd need to stick with plastic switches and light fittings or double insulated light fittings.

I think they're probably ok, except maybe the metal wall lights in lounge.
