Shower extractor fan

I have lived in 7 houses, only one didn't have a window and only that one had a fan, all the others we have simply opened that piece of glass in a frame allowing fresh air in and damp air out. Simple.

An open window, is subject to which way the prevalent wind happens to blow, if it blows at the window, then the moist air will be blown into the house, rather than being extracted. An extract fan, always extracts.

All I can say to that is I have never experienced the condensation issues that most seem to talk about, we always close the door to reduce the heat loss and airflow in.

Try it for yourself and see what happens.

No need to test it, it does work just fine - our bathroom window faces east, prevalent wind is from the west, so opening the window sucks the air and moisture straight out, but it's awfully cold. The fan works much better.

Over the last 20 years or so, better ones have been fitted with ball-bearing motors and rubber mountings, and are practically inaudible.
And I have to replace them every 12-18 months in a rental property and deal with the mould (or become one of those 'rogue' landlords they love to show on TV) but the other identical property where the tenant doesn't like the noise has no damp or mould issue...

Yes, I have known that with the same property at different times with different tenants.

One, no problem at all; another, 'damp' including shoes under bed damp and going mouldy.

Hmmm yes the damp shoes... which he tried to bill me for but 'threw them away' before making the claim. I found every possible form of ventilation blocked with tape.
