It's difficult to give a precise number of Nazi officials who pleaded they were "just following orders" because the defense was used broadly by many, and not all were tried in the same way. However, the claim that "I was just following orders" was a common defense strategy during the Nuremberg trials and subsequent trials of Nazi war criminals.

They should have been acquited then.

Unarmed civilians, especially those asleep in their beds, or in handcuffs, held under gunpoint, or injured POWs receiving medical treatment, are no threat to the soldiers with the guns.
To kill such civilians or inured combatants is a war crime.

It is to a soldier. Also there is Colchester military prison. About 100 times harder than any time you would serve in a civvy prison. After which you would be transferred to a civilian prison for serious crimes.

Civilian criminals are named.
The same should apply to war criminals.
Their crimes should be recognised, as should their sentence details.
Public shame is as much a penalty as the prison sentence.
