why arent customs borders checks robust?

British exporters have voiced deep frustration over post-Brexit border checks, blaming unclear customs guidance, rising costs, and poor communication from HMRC for supply chain delays and growing operational stress.

A new report commissioned by HMRC and carried out by Ipsos offers one of the first detailed “warts and all” appraisals of the UK’s border processes since leaving the EU. The study, based on interviews with 35 traders and freight agents, found that while most reported goods movements to be “generally smooth”, many also described the system as costly, opaque and emotionally draining for staff.

UK health chiefs privately admitted that a lack of border inspections in the wake of Brexit left British consumers exposed to diseased meat, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) can reveal.

Delays in implementing checks on imported food meant hundreds of people, including children, were poisoned by imported meat during a series of major salmonella outbreaks.

Scheduled 1 January 2025 UK-EU customs checks delayed again

The UK government is to delay for a seventh time some meat, dairy and plant product customs EU import checks. These were scheduled to come into effect on 1 January 2025 but are now likely to be moved out until 1 July 2025. The checks are part of the UK’s exit from the EU Customs Union which happened on 1 January 2021 following Brexit on 31 January 2020.

The government is reported as not being ready on border systems and will only introduce a limited range of checks on high-risk goods. In a letter to industry, Environment Minister Sue Hayman confirmed that the government was again looking to delay the introduction of controls on fresh fruit and vegetables until July 1, 2025.

I have said take backs are not legal without agreement. Push backs are entirely different.

Why do you dishonestly pretend someone said something they didn't when presented with facts that you can't argue with?
