Without a meter the signal is likely to be marginal and will break up in heavy rain.

A signal meter, just makes it easier to fine tune, when out of sight of a TV, connected to the satellite receiver - they are not essential.
 
I used to motorhome with one and it worked perfectly well, so there :p
The exception that proves the rule!

Never managed to make mine work well enough to do that. Went off screaming no matter where pointed or complete silence (depending on 'gain' control). And no way to silence the :censored: thing when screaming away (so as to just watch the needle)!!

A proper meter (probably £130+) should do better of course with S/N numbers, BER and other info plus a screen and video display. I always wanted one but could not justify the expense to myself.

The Humax, however was much cheaper (£0 ) ... and I'd got plonking my dish holding camera tripod on the ground using a compass to a fine art that I often had a signal of sorts straight away. (That then needed fine tuning incremental movements).
