• Looking for a smarter way to manage your heating this winter? We’ve been testing the new Aqara Radiator Thermostat W600 to see how quiet, accurate and easy it is to use around the home. Click here read our review.

What have you been doing today?

Yesterday I went to my first Berkeley Enthusiasts Club AGM.

Unfortunately the poor weather over the weekend deterred a lot of folks from bringing their own cars. I won the award for most original restoration... still work to go with the Berk - needs a proper paint job and a new seat.

Last week I was over the allotment and a bloody great wasp flew past my head and I actually felt the draft. It went into a bird nest box I had on my shed. Today, the same thing happened. It was pretty big. I removed the box and it flew out at me so I lobbed it and ran. When it disappeared, I looked into the box and there was a wasps nest. The grubs in it were bloody huge - bigger than normal wasps. I removed them. It kept coming back to where the box was so I replaced the box and when it went in I blocked up the hole with some tape, removed the box and submerged it in a bucket of water until it was dead. When dead, it was a lot smaller than when it was alive. I think it could have been an Asian hornet which are killing our British bees. We have a few beehives on the allotment so I hope I’ve done the right thing. Here it is next to a 5p coin for comparison.

Possible Asian hornet sightings need reporting.

I’ve had a terrible nights sleep. Couldn’t stop thinking about that hornet. Pretty sure now that it was a European one and I feel gutted at what I did. :(

Much better than getting stung. I wouldn't want a nest on my shed.

Some years ago, my cars polycarbonate (??) headlight lens's became rather opaque. I finely sanded, then polished them up, but they soon went opaque again. Second time around, after polishing them up, I sprayed them with the clear lacquer they use on car paintwork. That sort of worked, but they have ever since been just very slightly opaque, on the surface, without getting worse over time, so a reasonable success. Today, I decided to giving them a very fine polish up, with G4, after testing it on a small area. It worked fine, so I did the whole of both lamps.

We followed that with a BBQ - lamb cutlets, baked potatoes, and a salad, followed by strawberries, cream and ice cream.

If you're in a rush, and have to get the lenses clear enough to pass a MOT, wipe cellulose thinners over them. Allegedly!

Today, Root Canal treatment continues. I have appointments though to about xmas.

One hour, £1400:confused:
I didn't earn that much in the whole rest of the day - dang!

Went down to my mates house in East Ham where he was digging out a trench for his extension footings to fill my car with 10 bags of topsoil which he had very kindly sifted for me. He also gave me a large roll of wire netting which I am going to use to make a cage around my sweetcorn crop over the allotment to stop the pesky badgers from eating them again. Everybody over the allotment lost their sweetcorn to badgers last year - they went through the plots one at a time.

One neighbour had his netted greenhouse chewed through and another one thought he had got away with it and then they struck.
