What have you been doing today?

Having some Easy Peelers for breakfast.

Two weeks ago, they switched from mandarins from Spain to clementines from South Africa. I have been monitoring the seasons for several years. And this year, they seem totally different. Usually, the early clementines from South Africa are dry and tough and almost tasteless. This year they have been amazing. Incredibly juicy; almost bursting. And very tender, with a subtle and complex citrus flavour, not really like an orange at all. On the label the variety is called "Clemenules" or "Nules". Maybe they have had good growing weather in South Africa. This could all change, of course. Stick to South Africa, if you want to try. Ones from Peru have always been dreadful.

He also gave me a large roll of wire netting which I am going to use to make a cage around my sweetcorn crop over the allotment to stop the pesky badgers from eating them again. Everybody over the allotment lost their sweetcorn to badgers last year - they went through the plots one at a time.
Started making my cage tonight. Didn’t go over the allotment until late when it was a bit cooler. Stayed there until 9.45 when the gnats came out and started feasting on me so I called it a day and went home. Might finish it off tomorrow if it’s not too hot.

I’ve had a terrible nights sleep. Couldn’t stop thinking about that hornet. Pretty sure now that it was a European one and I feel gutted at what I did. :(
I've sort of redeemed myself today. I shoo'd a cat off that was playing with this. It lives to fight another day.

I cycled over the allotment this afternoon, emptied out one of my new potato grow bags, got a fairly decent crop and harvested, yet again, some more asparagus. I took some asparagus round to my sister and some potatoes round to my mum along with some mint. All on the cycle. Legs and undercarriage were a bit sore so I went home using the thumb trigger!

Just fitted a couple of 4ft 25w LED batten lights in my loft. Tried to do it live to save going all the way downstairs and isolating the upstairs lighting circuit but caused a big spark and a flash plus popped the breaker so had to go downstairs anyway to turn the juice back on. Before fitting those lights I had two 60w bulbs up there. Wow, it’s like there’s a searchlight up there now! Along with the recent larger size loft hatch with wooden steps that I recently fitted, that's something else I should have done 35 years ago when we moved here. Live and learn……

First-born's car was collected from its procedure in the week, and it's filthy state finally cracked me.

So I've spent a couple of hours this afternoon, cleaning it inside and out.

Not perfect but, for a white 2015 motah, not bad.

I'll give it a few weeks then give it another going over but, this time, hit it with the tar remover as well.

Eventually, I might even get round to making it all shoiny-loike (y)

Nipped over the allotment and finished off my corn cage. There is NO WAY those bloody badgers are getting my corn this year. It’s a four sided cage, three fixed with the front panel screwed on. I decided I didn’t need hinges and a lock as I will not need to open it until I’m picking the corn. It won’t need weeding as it’s got a good mulch in there. I have 16 corn plants in there and I planted one climbing French bean seed at the base of each plant so I should get a double harvest later in the year. :giggle:

Came home and made a chicken, pea and mushroom risotto.

That’s it for today, going to have my tea, have a shower and settle down to watch the Canadian F1 qualifying.

Mrs S's parent's car has been driving me nuts for weeks so a couple of weeks ago I washed it. Not perfect, but it soothed my OCD somewhat.

The worst part was the roof which was caked with filth, dirt, mud, moss, lichen and bird shoite.

A bus trip, lunch, and a wonder around Ripon. I've been there many times before, but always on business, and in a hurry.

That was yesterday, Saturday - We were planning, and all set up for yet another bus trip today, all the way to Hawes and back - A Sunday only bus, but that had to be unfortunately shelved, in the middle of the night - I went to bed, briefly dozed off, then woke up feeling quite unwell, too warm, heart racing. So put my dressing gown on, and went and sat for an hour, out in the garden, came back in, and feel asleep on the settee until 4am.

Fixed my boy's gaming chair today, unscrew the handle and drill out a few broken rivets, new rivets popped back in place and put back together, a five minute job ordinarily. Hour and a half with a broken wrist and my youngest assisting!
