Well, let them.

They will see a reduction in income that tourism brings.

And who wants to run the gauntlet of all the vile pick pockets in certain parts of certain countries?

How about brexxers holidaying more in their own country?

Sure, but IME, it's not half as bad, half as bad.

In Barcelona or Rome (as examples), you get one person (usually female) distracting you by touching your arm, while another is going into your pockets/ bag/ rucksack.

Anybody touching me would get a hard shove. But the trouble is, they operate in packed underground trains and buses.

Evil.

one to be careful of now is people asking you for directions and trying to get you to open your phone up to use google etc to show them . Then snatching the phone and running . Phone now open and possible access to banking etc

Yeah I’ve heard of that.

They’d be shocked when you pull out your 15 year old Nokia though

That is one suggestion to beat the thieves.

Don't take smartphones, but a dirt cheap dumb phone with a PAYG SIM.

Don't carry cash and only carry a debit card in a zipped well concealed pocket or money belt. Don't have anything in your pockets and if you have anything in a bag or rucksack, make sure it is nothing of value.

So, basically, if someone made off with your phone and bag it wouldn't be a huge deal.

But don’t forget to take your camera, your radio/music player, your sat nav, printed boarding passes, hotel booking, translating book or device, currency converter plus other handy devices/apps that are all rolled into a smartphone these days.

Failing that, just be careful about getting your phone out in public and if anyone asks you directions, don’t be afraid to say "Sorry, I din't know".

It's not about getting your phone out in public. The burgers target you regardless.
