Rupert Lowe.

Did the previous Government keep any track at all of visa overstayers for example?

Struggle to send them back if you don't even know who they are, where they are, or even if they are still here.

Just a lot of headline rhetoric to get the usual suspects wound up.

What's Rupert's criteria for 'must speak English'?

5% of words as detailed in the Oxford English Dictionary? 10%? 15%?

I wonder how many Brits that migrate to another country where English isn't the main language learn the local lingo? I'm sure all those who go to work in Saudi are fluent in Arabic.

15 years from now ... 'Sorry your care is so poor in this home Rupert, most of our staff got sent back cause they didn't meet all your criteria.'

"English is widely spoken in Saudi Arabia although Arabic is the official language and spoken by the majority of the population. English is taught as a compulsory second language in schools and is commonly used in business and other communication purposes, especially among the younger generation and in urban areas".

You’d be a bit of an idiot if you could only speak English and you went to work where it was not widely spoken.

Sounds a reasonable set of rules.

Yes, you might lose some slave-labour in the likes of care homes or farms or car washes. You know what? Those things just have to cost a bit more to attract non-slave wages.

If you go to someone else's home, you obey their rules. Same for a country. If I am in France, I behave as a respectful guest etc. And if they asked me to leave, then I would do so.

I would be surprised if 'most immigrants' were net contributors, as we seem to have a lot of low-skill or student or 'asylum' types.

I totally agree that the existing British-born layabouts and criminals are an issue. But there is absolutely no justification for choosing to import more people like this. That doesn't help. Those who are born here are a trickier problem.

AI Overview

For most UK work visas, applicants need to demonstrate English language proficiency, typically at a CEFR level of B1. This generally means being able to read, write, speak, and understand English at an intermediate level. There are various ways to prove this, including passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT), holding a UK degree or equivalent, or being a national of a designated English-speaking country.

Just interested, do you speak Spanish ?

Just interested, do you speak Spanish ?
Sí, Señor. Only joking. And yes, I know we had a villa in Spain but I rarely met a Spaniard in that area who couldn’t converse with me in English. I remember when our complex chairman was leaving to come back to the U.K. after living there for nearly 20 years, at the meeting he proposed that a new (Dutch) resident take his position as 'she could speak the language'. She was appalled that he had lived there, full time for 20 years and hardly knew any Spanish and she told him so! I felt embarrassed for him. We all did.

So, after the quick bit of research I have done above, it seems that for the most common visas, the migrant has to be able to speak English and cannot claim benefits or social housing. That seems to be the top three issues ticked off Rupert's list.
