I would have processing outside of the UK and have more safe routes for genuine refugees.

But I usually get criticised just for repeating it.

I would like to know how that would work in practice. Where would they be assessed. How many would we agree to take. What would happen to those turned down.

France offered to give space for an assessment centre, maybe an overseas territory. Numbers to be decided within the overall migration system.

Those turned away would be returned to their home country, which would need cooperation with others.

The EU seem to be having some success. Numbers were down 40% last year and are down another 10% this year.

They have several schemes. At the peak in 2015, nearly three quarters of a million asylum seekers landed on the Greek Islands from Turkey. This route is virtually zero now because of the deal between Turkey and the EU.

Italy has a deal with the North African countries which has halved that route.

So, some schemes do work.

France clearly has the power to stop the boats if it wants to. I think the idea would be that they would agree to do that if we agree to take a quota.

How can a 2015 deal that has resulted in more being sent from turkey to the EU than EU to turkey be responsible for reducing crossings?

I would suggest it’s more to do with blocking, pushback and general hostility that has forced them to take other routes.

Sometimes “persuasion” is needed.

Pick them up in the channel, land at Dover, take them to Gatwick and on to the processing centres. All on the same day.

Boats become redundant very quickly.

Which is where the cooperation comes in.

Some say we shouldn't be cooperating with anyone though.
