Ceiling rose wiring

I am replacing a light fitting and stupidly forgot to take note of how the ceiling rose is wired.

This is an upstairs landing light, which is controlled from a single upstairs switch and a double downstairs switch. The other side of the downstairs switch controls a downstairs light, which is also controlled by an additional single switch on the other side of the room.

The upstairs ceiling rose has two red, two black and two earth connections. I haven't touched the switches at all, but can't figure out the correct wiring for the upstairs ceiling rose. I've tried various combinations, some of which led to the downstairs light only working if the downstairs switch for the upstairs light was in a certain position.

Really hoping this is making sense!

Can any one give me any advice with this? Please do ask for more info if you need it.

This is the upstairs switch.

These are as described - two sets of wires, both with a red, black and earth (old style colours)

well typically when there are two cables you:

join the 2 red together (does that sound like it was before)
and then use the blacks to connect to the lamp L & N

But all this talk of things not working when the downstairs light is in a certain position, does really ring true for this setup

I'm convinced that's how it was in the original rose - two reds in the centre block, a black either side for the bulb feed.

Maybe it never worked properly in the first place...

Thanks :)

Does it work now? We aren't allowed any sleep until we know the outcome.
Not properly, but based on this I'm not convinced it ever did. The single upstairs switch currently seems to control which light the double downstairs switch will control. Can't get them both on at once.

I'm 99% sure the wires are back as they were and that this was always an issue. I suspect something isn't right in the downstairs double switch and I need a professional to take a look.

Ok. Show us a pic of the wiring to the downstairs switch.
PS. I guess there is only one upstairs light?

Seems odd that you'd never noticed.

Pics of upstairs and downstairs switches.

There is one light upstairs, one downstairs. Both are connected to the double switch downstairs, there is also a single switch downstairs for the downstairs light and a single switch upstairs for the upstairs light.

Currently with the upstairs switch in one position the downstairs light is controllable from both downstairs switches, but the upstairs light does not work from the downstairs double switch. With the upstairs switch in the other position the upstairs light is controllable by the downstairs double switch, but the downstairs light doesn't work with any switch.

This isn't my house, mother of my friend, so I can't currently get any more pics. My friend's mother is mentally frail and doesn't remember how it was before.

I would identify the supply red and move the strapper red to COM in a direct swap with yellow and do the same downstairs, then disconnect the other switch and test.

That may as well have been Greek fella, but thanks lol.

To be fair with zero knowledge of how this should be wired I'm concerned about making it worse if I start fiddling with it.
