Newel post - can I saw it?

Hi all,

The top of one of our newel posts on our stairs comes through the window sill (related to the house being converted at some point) it looks weird and gets in the way of the blind.

So we’re considering sawing it off.

Does anyone know of any reason why we shouldn’t saw the top off so the sill is flat/smooth again? Won’t affect anything structurally will it?

Pic attached

Thanks

If you didn't have a concertina style blind, the blind wouldn't be so much of an issue. I would change the blind first.

that will be an addition [dowelled on] as its only a half newel, so tap tap tap in several directions around the acorn protected by a towel or similar

Thanks, Forgot to say we are redecorating including changing that temporary blind but it’s likely to still interfere

Ahh this makes sense.. I wrongly thought the other half of the post might be in the wall ‍♂️

It won't affect anything structurally but you are removing a bit of character.

If having a massive dildo-shaped object on the hall windowsill counts for character in your area, let us know your major postcode region so we can exclude it from our rightmove searches

I'd be more worried if that's what a dildo looks like in your area.

What a weird thing to do.

Cut it off and cap sill with upvc window hockey stick board but extend it out past the cut off acorn. It will then also make your shelf a little deeper as it looks very narrow from the picture. Your Mrs will thank you as she can then put some **** or other on the windowsill :ROFLMAO:

Ridiculous, should have never been installed above sill . I would trim height and replace sill.
agreed - needs a new cill, and as averty says, a wider cill, I would bring it out to cover all of the newel post

Cill or Sill ? both ok apparently, I always use the former, but I seem to be the only one.
(apparently in the US they are called stools!)

there is no such thing as "wrongly thought" there is off course "we are all still learning" just have an open mind and listen to others who you think are honest and knowledgeable and learn from our very very many mistakes over the years that form our fair and honest often quite different solutions to the same problem -----am i knowledgeable enough to give you useful information i hope so but others will mark my score card ---this is what i like about the forum we correct each other in a helpful friendly way:);)
