Mandatory ID cards (Brit Card) to be announced tomorrow

That's so upside down it's unbelievable.

We voted for him because we had just gone through a disaster of a government headed by Thatcher
They had been in power too long
(I will admit that thatcher seems to be a god send now in view of starmer).
Just rubbish
What we all thought was Labour was headed by blair so we voted for him. What we didn't know at the time, or at least I didn't, was that blair's lot were not labour they were NEW LABOUR.
Yes, a fairly central, possibly slightly left
They were more tory than the tories
Not in a million years
. Now we have starmer in the chair, who I didn't vote for
Nobody in this country votes for a PM. Did you vote for Boris, May, Truss, Sunak?
and the actual labour party is headed by corbyn. We are doomed.
It's what is needed. Seperating the hard left from the central left.

Nonsense - You are suggesting an all encompassing ID system, replacing everything else. No one has suggested such a thing, only a universal, quick, single source of ID. Over forms of ID, could be requested, if needed.
You don't think this is the logical progression?

As an IT guy, have you ever worked on a high security system? That is, one that deals with very sensitive data, for which you need a high security clearance to access?
It doesn't sound like it.
So answer on an anonymous board. Have you or have you not?
I think we can conclude he hasn't
He asks on an anonymous board. I have passed my CISSP certification, definitely don't forget a waterbottle for the exam.
I'm guessing you've never worked for an Identity security software vendor. Is your background mostly end user?

One single form of ID, that is universally accepted? So to commit ID theft, I just need to hack your digital ID and you have no way to prove who you are to recover it. There are obvious flaws.

According to Polls 50% of people support the idea. According to this thread it looks more like 10%.
Single point of failure.

No, that's not a separation of duty, that's a duplication of duty (at least for the ID role in it) and an increased attack surface.

Utility bills are a good example of what's wrong with current verification methods. It's basically a crappy MFA token.
Wouldn't they have to increase the number and size of data centers in the UK to accomodate such a scheme?

Starmer announcing the plan now.

It's laughable. He's saying we have a problem with people entering the country illegally and then slipping into the black economy. The Brit Card is apparently going to solve this because it will be illegal to work without a digital ID.

How many on here think this is going to stop folk trying to enter the country illegally and in the same numbers?

I don't think it'll make any discernable difference.

Further, I think they know that.

It doesn't increase the attack surface - each one is a separate form of ID. Together they form a duplicate trust network. Think of a resiliant blockchain, I can't change the block in the chain, because there are other blocks. if I attack the whole chain, the other blockchains (duplicates) are unchanged.

No. The data is not large, think payment card terminals.

But I suspect some big IT services firm like Cr@pita, Cr@pGemini or Dolittieoitte will be charging a fortune for the project.

If only we had a unique number that was linked to our tax and NI payments.. We could call it a National Insurance Number.
