Well done wind

Yeah its the same charges that we have to pay for nuclear when we dont want it.

HPC will be running around the clock wether we want it or not and well have to pay >£130 per MWh for tbe privelidge. (Current average price is £90).

There's a lot to be said for having national ownership of generation and distribution.

Investing for the benefit of the nation as part of a consolidated national strategy

It's hard to believe that nobody thought of it before.

Oops, they did.

But the Tories flogged it off for private gain.

That worked well, didn't it?

Next stop, sewage and water.

As it stands gas generation will be around for a long time IYAM.

Which is entirely different to "has to be around for a long time to come".

Same as the huge numbers of crumbling, asbestos - riddled schools, hospitals, and other public buildings.

They likely will still be around - unless they fall down or burn down - for many years or decades to come.
They don't have to be.

I agree, Gas is great for on demand power. We might replace it with biomass but on demand power is great.

My guess for the future is more battery and pumped hydro to completely drive out OCGT from the grid. By the time wr have enough storage available we csn start only turning on the CCGTs to cover low periods and recharge the storage. As we get more storage and more renewables well use the gas plants less and less.

A pipe dream I know, but also making buildings more efficient (including the natural wastage of older buildings being replaced) will reduce the per-unit requirements.

Our whole civilisation is founded on fossil fuels.

Anyone got yesterday's wind figures?

Civilisation was founded long before they discovered fossil fuels, dummy. In particular in the days when they were reliant upon wind and water power.
Dummy even Neanderthals were using tar pits 60,000 years ago - fossil fuel

Lol lol lol nosey!

Did ye ken this one: our stupid governments' commitments to net zero means they are stopping extracting gas from our own North Sea, yet they are now buying gas from Norway, at much increased costs, FROM THE SAME SEA.
