Been rewiring my own house on and off for about 5 years now lol..

Done half of the downstairs lighting today as im having new carpets....I was in two minds wether to bother as the old wiring isn't that old really although it did all have the green earth sleeve.

Would anyone else have bothered?

Its gone from this...

No visible earthwire on the old. I expect some old electrician clipped it off. (Edit, looks like you may have a separate one, which is quite unusual)

PVC cable does not wear out. Unless it has green slime (none visible in your pics) or has been overheated by contact with hot pipes or something, or perished outdoors from sunlight, it stays in good condition for more than 50 years, and is usually only replaced when you need lots more sockets or something.

Its not a separate cpc its in the grey sheath with the red x 2

I did realise I was wasting my time really but it's mostly brown and blue now so might aswell carry on.....I think :)

Did the original one(s) have grommets?

Pure green colour on the CPC suggests 1978(?) or older.

If you’re planning to stay in the house, doing a rewire while you have time and health on your side is a good move imho
Yeah we will stay here now, that was my thinking, get it out the way just incase it needs doing when I'm not capable (y)

No grommet, it's a 16mm box with the smooth entrance hole?,

I'll change that when I decorate the living room  one day

It's 1 core+earth cable, with green sleeving over the earth, AFAICT.

Once upon a time you could get single (Black) and E too, I have never used singles sheathed for years.
Single and E has often costed more than T & E (perhaps costs more because far less quantity of production runs?) so lots just used bog standard T & E and snipped the unused conductor off at each end!

I'm fairly confident you can still buy the harmonised equivalent, mostly likely Oop North, where they seem to go ape for it.

The grommet less boxes with smooth holes (Ooh, Matron!) can be quite modern. But obviously not in this case.

Green/ yellow sleeving was introduced from 1 January 1978.

Does that box only have that pressed out earth lug?

No it has a brass earth terminal on the top right
