I’m fitting acoustic wall panels and the wall has a socket and switch. I’d like to mount these on the surface of the panels. This will hide the cut edges of the panels and make the job look neater. They are currently in a metal box sunk in the wall.

Can you please suggest how this can be achieved. Thanks in advance.

The cable terminations behind the socket must be in an enclosure. Obviously you would need to sink a suitable back box into your acoustic panels and mount the socket to the box in the normal way.

I had this issue when correcting snagging, I got PB boxes and measured the required depth, carefully marked and cut the sides to suit. The panels were very white and plates shiny chrome so white worked best in that instance. Extension boxes wouls not have worked as the required depth was very different each side

I think the plasterboard boxes come in 35mm depth? The slatted boards are 21mm thick.

Either a new galvanised box fitted flush with the face of the panels, or if you have already installed the panels, an extender box of suitable size: https://www.yesss.co.uk/galvanised-steel-extension-box-2-gang-25mm on top of the existing one.
Suggest you spray paint the box black before installation so the visible edges are less obvious.
I think this can work. The slatted panels are 21mm thick. We then have some adhesive gap. This should allow me to fit the new sockets flush in the way I want. I will paint the boxes black.

When I cut out the slatted panels for these extension boxes, how much slack do I have for when the socket fitting goes on? Is the back box much smaller then the socket that goes on top?

I didn't describe that well.

I measured the distance from the surface of the board to the metal backbox and marked that distance on the side of the PB box then cut off at that mark, removing the back of the PB box and creating a sleeve
