I have huge respect for anyone who discovers and evolves their political beliefs. I can completely relate to the journey he has been on. I usually have much more of a problem with anyone who votes whatever their dad did and refuses to shift, whatever the reality.
I'd say that article's attempting to rubbish him, in The Times's typical pro-establishment way, but actually ends up saying he's a pretty decent bloke.
If that sneering, bitchy tone is as bad as they can say about him then he's probably OK.
