A bill has been passed getting rid of the remaining hereditary peers in the House of Lords. Kieth’s response to corruption by politically appointed peers is to sack the ones that have been there as long as 900 years, and who were independent minded.

****ing vampires.

Sounds like a compromise was reached...

Baroness Smith confirmed the government would offer life peerages to the Conservatives and crossbenchers, meaning some hereditaries are likely to remain in the Lords.

...somewhere, Carman is celebrating this small step to a Republic.

Bliar promised an elected second chamber and conveniently ignored it. You can see Re form in power packing it wth their supporters and donors. How is a politically motivated appointment less undemocratic than what is there at the moment. Take moral issues like assisted suicide or trans traitor young people. Peers will just follow the party line. And the Mandelsons appointed to powerful political positions.

All we end up with is a House divided along party lines with fewer independent voices to break the deadlock in divisive issues - a mirror image of American politics right now. Still keen on the idea of a written British Constitution?

So you think that the US senate should add some random rich people whose family own a lot of land to make it more effective?

WE rent land from our local Lord, he is a hereditory peer, he has traveled and works as well as running an estate, he is a good well ballanced individual who you can talk to, some years ago I went over to the field one evening to feed the horses, I noticed that the door to the farmhouse which was empty at the time was open so I went in and checked the property for intruders, found no one and no sign of forced entry so phoned estate, Lordy answered, thanked me mucho and came over to secure the property. We get invited to the Christmas do at the castle every year and I get discount on my mooring fees as he ownes part of the estuary, he always says hello if he sees me, a thouroughly nice chap, hope he doesn't get the bums rush.

lol that is Amerrica now. There is virtually no social mobility, it’s those who contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars that get their kids into uni.

Wtf do we have a legislative chamber which has also been stuffed with religious nutjobs...

As a percentage wise, the UK has the second highest number of 'clerics' in the world involved in legislative matters...

Number one is Iran!

Get rid of the whole lot and have an elected second chamber with no political allegiances!
