The TV is model 37AV555D and the remote is SE-R0344, also Toshiba.

The remote flashes the signal light when buttons are pressed but the TV does not respond. The TV can be operated with its own buttons.

Have tried fresh batteries in the remote and pressing every one of its buttons. No joy.

Is there a reset function for the TV?

Get mobile phone.
Open camera
While looking at the phone screen pointing camera at remote control.
Press a button on the remote. You will see the ir blaster flashing on phone screen if remote works.
You can't see with your eye but the phone camera will.

If nothing can be seen remote is broken. Buy the original remote off eBay or Amazon. Don't bother with the all for one remotes

Turn off power for ten minutes and turn on again.

Probably a duff remote control, we've gone through a few in this household, buy one off Amazon that has at least a few reviews, then easy to return if it turns out not to be the remote.

TV remotes these days are rubbish, except the LG one that seems of have stood the test of time ....

@freddiemercurystwin

People buy a new remote without testing.
As I explained above, you can look at the flashing Infrared IR blaster with your mobile phone screen and camera.
I've tested loads though and normally even with new batteries the IR blaster don't flash.
I guess they burn out or die of age. I'm going that way. Ha

Could be silicone sweat, its to do with cutting corners when manafacturing the rubber button pad somthing about not baking the silicone and so after time it sweats and you loose contact. Take it apart and clean everything

The OP suggested the 'signal light' on the remote was flashing, which suggests the buttons at least, are working OK. I would suggest the camera test, to confirm it is transmitting.

Yes, I checked the remote's flashing light with my mobile's camera and it lighting up when buttons are pressed..

I've tried again today, powering down the TV and batteries (new) out of the remote but still no go on power up. Also give the TV's sensor a wipe.

I've been through the onscreen menu but no sign of a reset on the TV.

Perhaps the remote has lost its frequency settings.

its worth mentioning
if you have another tv remote by the same manufacturer it may be fully or partially comparable even iff a different model

According to the user manual, the genuine Toshiba remote for that TV is CT-90300.

Is your SE-R0344 the original supplied remote or an aftermarket replacement?

Don't know about remote but if CT-90300 is the right application for the TV, I may source one.
Thanks

I bought the fancy optional extra remote for my LG, the optional one uses a mix of IR and 'wireless', to transmit to the TV. One day, it stopped working, and needed to be re-paired to the TV. Is there a pairing setting somewhere in the TV?

Power down requires unplugging tv?

Pairing is only needed when there's either wireless involved, or it's a universal remote where the one of the various code sets needs to be chosen to match the TV.

I think in u/DIYspanner's case this is a simple basic IR remote designed to work a specific range of products, be that TVs or DVD players or Freeview recorders etc. Occam's Razor applies. If there's light coming from the IR emitter, then the remote works, but it's not the right type for the device the user wants to control. The DVD recorder remote won't work the telly.
