Nigel Farage has admitted that he accepted an undisclosed £5mn gift from a crypto billionaire, saying that the money was intended to keep him “safe and secure” for the rest of his life.

The Reform UK leader appears to have broken parliamentary rules by not reporting the money from Thailand-based Christopher Harborne, which he received before being elected in 2024.

MPs are obliged to report financial benefits they receive in the 12 months prior to being elected, within a month of being elected. The Conservative Party said it had reported Farage to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner for investigation.

The huge financial gift, first reported by the Guardian, underscores the extent of Harborne’s influence in British politics, even though he has lived in Thailand for the past 20 years.

At the time of the gift, in 2024, Farage had said he did not intend to stand as an MP and was equivocal about re-entering the fray of British politics. But he changed his mind weeks after receiving the money.

Harborne donated a total of £10mn to Farage’s Brexit Party before and after the 2019 general election, money that allowed Farage to apply intense pressure on the government to withdraw fully from the EU. He then donated £12mn to Reform last year, making him one of the biggest donors in British political history."

That’s why he’s never in Clacton, he’s been advised by security it’s safer to meet Trumpf as often as possible.

Das fuhrer/poundland trump has been referred to parliament’s standards watchdog after the Guardian revealed he received an undeclared £5m gift from a party donor...

Now why would a billionaire stump up so much cash for 'gas 'em all, hitler was right' garbage?

No doubt the usual suspects will approve of bought politicians...

If of course they happen to be ones they worship!

But is it illegal for a billionaire to say I will pay you £x if you stand for election? How is that influencing the electorate? In that scenario it would be kept quiet because of the likely political consequences, not because it is inherently unlawful.

It can't be kept quiet.
Such a gift (up to 18 months before, I think) prior to becoming a candidate, must be declared.
Even if there was no intention to become a candidate on receipt of the gift. It must still be declared on deciding to stand for election.

Not declaring it is against parliamentary rules...

And donating money (purportedly for 'security' for das fuhrer) could also be used for campaigning and thus influencing the electorate...

Just as outside money has influenced general elections over the years, and of course a referendum...

If you don't understand that, then you have already been 'influenced' ;)

You don’t want to wait for the parliamentary enquiry on that then? Looks like you’ve already found him guilty.
He could very well be innocent...
You thought this of lorry driver Mo Robinson who was found with all those dead immigrants in a container being pulled by lorry he was driving. Don’t want to give the same consideration to Nigel? Ellal the Hypocrite. No change.

Security is the reason for keeping it quiet, there will be exceptions to the rule.

I suspect most of the bit coin has been converted to cash.

A man with a pound in his pocket that has a cardboard box as his shelter isn't going to lead this country out of this mess.

Its the nature of the job that multie million billion trillion air, will get the chance to fix this country. Im not bothered just as long as Nigel fixes the mess we are in.
