He's gained time.
By resigning, the investigation into him accepting bribes has been paused.
That none of the other parties are contesting him suggests they know he's likely guilty - although they will stand in the next full election against him, if he does get re-elected in this by election.
And he's gained theatre. Like Trump and following his playbook, the worst thing is to be ignored. Play the underdog, paint yourself as a valiant victim struggling against oppressors, and plenty of people will support you.

Sadly, the real squirrels have been scared away by all this promoting of the virtual ones.
In the beginning there were red squirrels, then came the grey squirrels. Now we're being inundated with virtual squirrels.
Real Squirrel meat is plentiful, ethical and free-range and available. Apparently it's also tasty.

I hope Farage can gracefully step aside, hand over his party to his colleagues and that Reform and Restore can settle their differences and merge for the greater good. He can always be party chairman or something.
