They are coming back in again. They are making a come back on the same level as vinyl is.

I'm looking for a modern take on a cassette player too.

But I can't find any decent reviews or any decent kit in my price range (around 230).

You would think that nowadays with how tech has moved on etc, with the popularity of H-iFi returning that the market would be flooded with adverts etc, I am finding it difficult just to find the right deck to play vinyl on, hence this thread in hoping there would be some experts on on our forum that could help out.

Just look for any second hand turntable that is over 30 years old and in decent condition. Put a new stylus on it and you are away! Don't bother with modern turntables (poor quality compared with older ones), or the very 'high-end' ones (snob value only).

You might need a pre-amp if you are connecting it to an amplifier with no turntable input. A cheap headphone amplifier will do.

Only thing that crosses my mind with buying a 30 year old turntable is the wear on the motor or drive belt, it would affect the speed of the turntable and maybe play the record slower or faster or perhaps vary the speed? Is that a thing or is that just me?

OK, why not here?

Get yourself one of their 2m kettle lead mains leads.

A mere snip at £255.00

Then upgrade it.

Add super clamp, a "spike-protecting component" that will improve clarity (they don't mention anything about protecting the equipment) for £14. But don't forget to replace it every 5 years, as they recommend.

Then you can upgrade the 13A fuse.
Either swap the regular one for Superfuse at £35 or Ultrafuse at £75.

Then there is a "burn in" process for £15.00

Does any of that make sense? Especially the last bit?

Yeah, we sell the cables because they sound brighter and lack bass, but I'm afraid the more you use it, the more bassy it will get. Sorry about that.

There is one more option.

Maybe sparks everywhere are missing a trick? They could all "pre-condition" rolls of cable by passing current through them and charging more...

Anyway, for the bargain price of £558, you too could have a 2m mains lead with an Ultrafuse and all the other extras listed above!

Back in 72 I went to the cinema to see Clockwork Orange, the futuristic estate where Alex and his droogs hung out has been in the news a lot recently because the final appeal against it's demolition to make way for new housing has been lost.

In another scene Alex goes to his bedroom to play a bit of the old Beethoven and the record player was so futuristic looking I assumed it was something rigged up especially for the film.
Discovered years later it was a Michell Gyrodec, I desperately wanted one but couldn't justify the expense.
If I had one, I probably wouldn't even bother playing records on it, which would be fine because it's a work of art on it's own. Just looking at one would be a pleasure. Haven't looked at prices in recent years but I'm sure some good 2nd hand ones would be available.
